Epic Willow Pharmacy Certification: What It Is and What It's Worth
Willow is Epic's pharmacy application — one of the most technically complex modules in the Epic suite and one of the more specialized certifications in the contract market. Here's what the credential covers and what it gets you.
Willow Inpatient vs. Willow Ambulatory
There are two distinct Willow certifications, and they cover meaningfully different applications:
- Willow Inpatient— Epic's inpatient pharmacy system, used by hospital pharmacists for order verification, medication dispensing, clinical decision support, and integration with clinical documentation. This is the larger, more complex of the two, and typically the higher-demand certification.
- Willow Ambulatory— Epic's outpatient pharmacy management system, used in health system-owned retail and specialty pharmacies. Covers prescription workflow, medication dispensing, and integration with the Ambulatory EHR.
Most Willow consultants specialize in one or the other, though experienced consultants with multiple go-lives often hold both. Health systems implementing a full Epic pharmacy footprint typically need consultants across both tracks.
What the certification exams cover
Both Willow exams test application build and configuration — not clinical pharmacy knowledge, though a clinical background is useful context. The exams are scenario-based and cover:
Willow Inpatient
- Medication record build — formulary, orderable items, medication preference lists
- Clinical decision support — dose checks, drug-drug interaction alerting, order sets
- Dispensing workflow — automated dispensing cabinet integration (Pyxis, Omnicell), barcode medication administration
- Pharmacy reporting and workqueue build
- Integration with CPOE (physician order entry) and nursing documentation
Willow Ambulatory
- Retail pharmacy workflow — prescription intake, verification, dispensing
- Insurance routing and adjudication
- Specialty pharmacy workflows
- MyChart integration points for patient medication management
- 340B program support configuration
How training works
Like all Epic certifications, Willow training requires a sponsoring organization — the health system implementing Epic or a consulting firm with an Epic contract. There is no self-enrollment path.
Training is delivered either on-site at Epic's campus in Verona, Wisconsin or via virtual instructor-led training (VILT). Willow Inpatient training typically runs 5 days given the complexity of the application. Willow Ambulatory is typically 4 days.
Willow training often requires more clinical pharmacy context than other Epic modules — instructors expect trainees to understand medication orders, formulary structure, and basic dispensing concepts going in. If you don't have a pharmacy background, doing some preparation on how hospital pharmacy operations work will make the training week significantly more productive.
What it's worth in the market
Willow Inpatient is one of the higher bill-rate certifications in the Epic contract market. The combination of technical complexity, clinical domain knowledge required, and lower supply of experienced consultants compared to clinical modules like Ambulatory pushes rates up.
In 2026, bill rates for Willow Inpatient-certified consultants typically range from $100–$155/hour depending on go-live experience and engagement type. Willow Ambulatory runs slightly lower at $90–$130/hour, reflecting lower implementation complexity.
What moves the number up:
- Multiple Willow Inpatient go-lives as a build analyst (not AT or super-user support)
- ADC integration experience (Pyxis and Omnicell are the two dominant vendors — knowing both helps)
- 340B program configuration experience for Willow Ambulatory
- Clinical pharmacy background alongside the technical cert
- Complementary certifications: Beacon (oncology pharmacy), EpicCare Inpatient (clinical documentation side)
Willow demand in the current market
Health systems are in a multi-year wave of Epic go-lives and upgrades. Pharmacy is typically one of the later workstreams in a big-bang implementation — it comes after clinical documentation and revenue cycle are further along — which means Willow demand often lags the initial wave by 6–12 months.
For optimization and upgrade work, Willow demand is more consistent: Epic releases pharmacy updates on a regular cycle, and organizations that implemented several years ago are continuously working through optimization backlogs. This is a reliable source of ongoing contract work for experienced Willow consultants.
